Avanite WebCache Manager allows for the Windows webcachev01.dat file and associated browser history, cookies and temporary internet data to be managed at a granular level. Rather than roaming all the redundant data WebCache Manager allows only specific data to be captured whilst maintaining the experience for the user.

Any administrator having to manage a roaming user estate, albeit physical or virtual, and using Internet Explorer will have come across issues with History and Cookies. Previously these were held in a folder and could be roamed simply - in IE10+ these are now managed in a webcachev01.dat file within the user profile.

This file starts at 32MB and can rapidly increase to gigabytes causing issues with any profile solution implemented. This has an impact on both users and organisations. The users are impacted due to slower login and logoff times, and organisations are impacted due to increased storage costs;

  • Ballooning storage costs
  • Increasing login and logoff times.

Currently organisations have two options; one is to capture the file, accept the storage overhead and poor login times; the second is to not capture this file and accept the negative user experience.

Solutions are unavailable to delete this file (locked open by OS during user session) but WCM takes a fresh approach to the problem by managing the content of it;

  • Manage the number of days History to keep
  • Manage the number of days Cookies to keep (including Cookie files on disk)
  • Management of Temporary Internet files

This will improve user experience as it will reduce login and logoff time as the webcache file will now be managed. It will also reduce central storage requirements.
