Athena is a software that is used in a laboratory of anatomic pathology to manage all the workflow and the devices involved in the workflow.

Athena is a Java application based on swing, the backend is an appication server that exposes some services that are based on SOAP. The third layer is based on an Oracle Database. The client side (that runs on the citrix server) invokes the server services to manage the objects related to the lab workflow.
The main object is the "case" it contains all the information related to the exams made by a patient. When a patient's specimen is to be examined in a laboratory of Anatomic Pathology it is created a case associated to the patient, the specimen (part of the patient body) is reduced in blocks, including some peces of tissues in formalin, and then by working on these blocks with some processes the technicians obtain the slides that are read under a microscope by a doctor. All the process must be done preventing any clinical error and tracking all the phases so they are needed barcode printers for slides or blocks and barcode readers. Often some activities cannot be interrupted by using the hands on the keyboard or on the mouse so it must be used a voice control software to manage the application. At the end of the work the doctor writes a report and signs it with a digital signature. The case is so closed and the report printed. Athena manages the information about a case and provides the user a series of forms that guide them in the workflow. Other forms are used to make some statistics studies or to configure the system or to integrate the application with other applications or device (for example in a hospital there can be a centralized system to manage the patients' information or the orders to be sent to the departments so several forms let Athena's users to interact with these other softwares typically through a backend side integration, they have no impact on the Citrix platform).

Athena is a 3-layers application. the Presentation layer is the part that needs to be run on the citrix platform. Athena client is a rich client application based on Java Web Start it requires some Software dependencies (Java, Open Office, Acrobat Reader, Medvocal) and manages some Hardware devices like printers, slides printers, blocks printers, microscopes, cameras, barcode scanners, smart card reader and so on. It is used to manage all the workflow of an Anatomic pathology laboratory, In our testing enviroments we already tested the following devices:

  • Zebra slide printers
  • Thermo Print Mate
  • Olympus microscopes SC30, SC100, UC30 and ColorView
  • Fujitsu fi 7160
